What to do following a road accident

A few sensible steps to take after a collision on the road

When you have been involved in a road accident of any description, very often sticking to rules and meeting legal requirements can be the very last thing on your mind. However it is important that you realise what your obligations are when you are in this position.

It is possible to be prosecuted for leaving the scene of an accident or failing to provide your particulars. You may breach your insurance company policy by failing to do certain things and that may lead to the insurer refusing indemnity, leaving you to pick up the bill.

So what are you supposed to do after an accident on the road? Here we summarise a guideline for general information:

  1. Always exchange names, addresses, phone numbers (mobiles only if there is no alternative), insurance company details and registration numbers.

  1. Identify the driver of the other vehicle and who the owner of the vehicle is.

  1. Find out who insures the vehicle?

  1. Note a description of each vehicle, including year, make, model, colour and damage sustained and area of impact. This latter point can be very important.

  1. Note the exact location of the collision and how it happened - take photos if at all possible and provide a small diagram for your insurers if you can.

  1. Do not discuss who was to blame for the accident in the aftermath and certainly make no admissions of negligence.

  1. Note the names addresses and telephone numbers of any witnesses

  1. Inform the police - The police do not attend RTA's where there are no injuries but it is still worth reporting every incident.

  1. Report the accident to your motor insurers as soon as you can.
