Vehicle damage - repair and write off valuation claimscar accident claims adviceIf your vehicle has been damaged in a road accident, there are a number of ways that you can deal with your claim:
Whether or not the accident was your fault, if you have fully comprehensive cover, you will be entitled to have your vehicle repaired by your own insurance company. The repairs will usually start once the vehicle has been inspected by an approved repair shop and / or a motor engineer.
You may have an excess to pay which means you have to meet the first part of any claim costs. Excess payments usually range from £50-£650. You can recover your excess payment provided you were not responsible for the accident. More about that here in our claims against the other party section.
If your vehicle is uneconomical to repair – in other words it is classified a write off – then the comprehensive policy will cover you for the replacement cost of the vehicle. This will usually not be the price you paid (nor anything close to it) because insurers are obliged to indemnify against the “market value” which should reflect the price for an exact replacement on the open market.
If you have a vehicle valuation dispute with your insurer – why not check your value against the Parkers Guide which is still used within the industry.
NOTE: The insurer will always retain the remains of the vehicle (salvage) in write off situations.
If you have only TPFT cover you will be not be covered for your own accident damage but will be covered for the other party’s damage if you were at fault. This means that if you were not at fault – you will need to claim against the other parties insurance policy to recover your repair or write off costs.
We may be able to help you with such a claim if you have suffered personal injury as well as vehicle related losses. Make an enquiry today and we shall discuss your situation with you and provide FREE ADVICE
Again the same situation as with TPFT polices applies here. Your own motor insurer will not deal with your vehicle damage claim – this will need to be pursued against the responsible party. Again we will provide FREE ADVICE to you in these circumstances
Whilst your vehicle is off the road you may be entitled to car hire (rather than courtesy car usage which is becoming increasingly difficult for insurers to arrange) Please read our page about car hire in order to learn whether you might be eligible for such a vehicle.
If you have any complaints about your insurers conduct during any claim negotiations – please contact the Financial Services Ombudsman to lodge a formal complaint.
