Whiplash injuries

How is the spine affected

The spine is one of the most durable parts of your body. It is designed in such a way that it is strong and flexible but is also able to absorb damage or injury in a most remarkable way.

The spine is made of solid bony parts that are joined by discs and ligaments. It is protected by muscles along the centre of the back. Because of the way the spine is built, it is very difficult to sustain a serious injury. Usually a car accident or similar event will not cause injuries that will result in lasting damage.

Whiplash injuries rarely affect the bones in the spine. It is usually the case that the protective muscles or the spinal discs take the brunt of the impact. Bony injuries are far more serious and long lasting.

It is not uncommon for the spine to become misaligned as a result of an accident. This form of injury can also be serious but generally physiotherapy or chiropractic treatment can repair the damage and help the whiplash victim make a full recovery.

Whiplash should always be treated seriously because without adequate care symptoms can be chronic. Always seek appropriate medical advice. You should also speak to a legal advisor to determine whether you should be entitled to compensation for the injury you have suffered.

If you have been involved in an accident and suffered injury – speak to our representatives now and find out more about claiming your compensation.
